Luft und Raumfahrtmuseen muss man sich in den USA immer ansehen, die sind alle sehenswert, wenn man sich dafür interessiert. Ich war zwar schon mal 1982 in diesem Museum. Da es aber vollständig abbrannte und neu aufgebaut wurde, war es für mich quasi ein neues Erlebnis.
Hier gibt es die Apollo 9 Kapsel im Original und unzählige Flugzeuge von den Anfängen der Fliegerei bis heute mit der SR71 und F-18 der Blue Angels

Aerospace museums are a "must visit" in the US, all them are worth seeing, if one is interested in it. I have visited this museum in1982 already. But since that it burnt down and was rebuilt. For me it was almost a new experience.
You´ll find the original Apollo 9 and countless aircraft from the beginnings of Human Flight to date with the SR71 and F-18 Blue Angels

Der in den neunziger Jahren ausgemusterte Flugzeugträger USS Midway liegt im Hafen von San Diego und ist als Museum ausgebaut.
Er war von 1945-1992 in Dienst und zwar weltweit in allen möglichen Einsatzgebieten, von Vietnam über Golfkrieg bis hin zu Rettungs Missionen aufgrund des Pinatubo Ausbruchs.
Das war natürlich ein spezielles Erlebnis, dieses riesige Teil mal auch von innen zu besichtigen. Auf den Flug Drecks befinden sich die Flugzeug aller Zeiten, die jemals auf diesem Flugzeugträger stationiert waren.
Leider hatte ich an dem Tag meine Kamera verlegt, ihr müsst also mit qualitätsmäßig schlechteren iPhone 3 Bildern vorlieb nehmen.

The Aircraft carrier USS Midway is located in the harbor of San Diego since it has been decommissioned in the nineties and has been turned into an impressive museum.
It has been in service from 1945-1992 anywhere in the world in all possible fields of operation, from Vietnam through the Gulf War to rescue missions due to the Pinatubo eruption.
Of course that was a special experience, to visit this huge metal piece also from the inside. On the flight decks there are static displays of the aircraft of all times, which ever were stationed on this aircraft carrier.
Unfortunately, I had misplaced my camera that day , so you have to live with the poor quality of iPhone 3 pictures this time.

Ich war zwar schon mal in den neunziger Jahren in diesem Zoo, aber ich hatte so angenehme Erinnerungen an die Vielzahl der Tiere und Pflanzen, dass ich die Gelegenheit wahrnehmen wollte, noch mal einen Besuch zu machen. Faule Menschen wie ich machen natürlich erst mal eine Reise mit dem stinkenden doppelstöckigen Bus und genießen die herrliche Aussicht während der Fahrt durch den Zoo. Dass nur die Fußgänger die Abgase mitkriegen habe ich halt später als Fußgänger erst erfahren. Hier ist dringende Elektrifizierung angesagt...
Wie beim letzten Mal brauchte ich den ganzen Tag, um mir alles, was mich interessierte, anzusehen. Hier in meinen Bildern sind nur ganz wenige Ausschnitte von dem, was gezeigt wird. Faszinierend für mich waren natürlich der Panda Gao Gao und die Urwälder mit original Bambusbäumen. Gau Gau vertilgte tatsächlich pfundweise fingerdicke Bambusstäbe so wie wir Salzstangen essen.

San Diego Zoo
Although I have already been in this zoo back in the nineties , I had so many pleasant memories of the variety of animals and plants that I wanted to take this opportunity again to revisit. Lazy people like I am firstly take a trip with the smelly double-decker bus and enjoy the magnificent view while driving through the zoo. Only pedestrians are getting the exhaust gases in their noses..(that cries for a battery solution).
Like last time, I needed all day for my visit. Here in my pics there are only a few excerpts from what is shown. Fascinating for me heve been the Panda Gao Gao and the tropical rain forests with original bamboo trees. Gau Gau actually destroyed pounds of finger-thick bamboo sticks just like we eat pretzel sticks.

San Diego hat als Millionen-Stadt (1,4 Millionen Einwohner) natürlich einiges zu bieten.
Ich hatte die Gelegenheit, ein Baseball Spiel zu besuchen und zwar zwischen den San Diego Padres und den Arizona D-Backs. Eine unglaubliche Atmosphäre. In der Innenstadt gibt es das so genannte der Gaslight-Quarter. Aber nicht, was ihr denkt, sondern hier sind nette alte Gaslaternen installiert. In diesem Viertel befindet sich auch das Hardrock Café, wo ich mir natürlich eine Kappe kaufen und die tägliche Vitamin Dosis in Form eines Margaritas zu mir nehmen musste.
Sehenswert sind auch Hafen und Balboa Park. Im Balboa Park, der sehr schön angelegt ist, befinden sich zahlreiche Museen, unter anderem auch das von mir besuchte er in Air & Space Museum, das Museum of Men, das Museum of Art u.v.m

San Diego has got a lot to offer as a huge city with 1.4 million inhabitants.
I had the opportunity to attend a baseball game between the San Diego Padres and the Arizona D-Backs. An incredible atmosphere. In the city center there is the so-called the Gaslight Quarter. Not what you are thinking, but here are nice old gaslights installed. The Hard Rock Café is also located in this district, of course I buy a cap and consume the daily vitamin dose in form of a Margarita...
Also worth seeing are the harbor and Balboa Park. In Balboa Park, which is very nicely laid out, there are numerous museums, including Air & Space Museum, the Museum of Men, the Museum of Art and many more

Kaum war der Kurzurlaub in San Diego beendet, ging es schon weiter Richtung Las Vegas. Aber nicht auf dem direkten Weg, sondern über eine landschaftlich sehr interessante Fahrt durch den Joshua Tree Nationalpark, die Mojave Wüste und am Hoover Dam vorbei.
Mitten im Joshua Tree Nationalpark gibt es diese einmaligen Felsformationen, die ich auch fotografiert habe - die so genannten Jumbo Rocks. Die Joshua Trees waren schon verblüht und trugen recht große Nüsse.
Am Hoover Damm waren zwei Dinge neu für mich: Der extrem niedrige Wasserstand des Lake Mead und die neu gebaute imposante Autobahnbrücke, die es bei meinem letzten Besuch vor sechs Jahren noch nicht gab. Wenn man die Fläche des Lake Mead berücksichtigt und den niedrigen Wasserstand, kann man sich ausrechnen. wie viel Wasser Kalifornien fehlt. Ich würde denen ja gerne etwas von unserem jetzigen Regen rüber schicken.
Der Las Vegas Besuch muss sein, besonders wenn man sowieso in der Nähe ist. Aber nicht wie viele glauben, um zu spielen. Ich genieße das Ambiente, die schönen Hotels, die schönen Pools, das gute Essen und die Shows oder was sonst drum rum geboten wird. Da Siegfried und Roy wie ich schon in Rente sind, waren wir dieses Mal im Aquarium des Mandalay Bay Hotels, Shark Rief genannt. An Abend Shows wurde nichts geboten, was mich besonders interessiert hätte.
Am 19.4. ging es dann weiter nach Los Angeles Airport zum Weiterflug nach Hawaii, aber darüber gibt es demnächst eine extra Bilderserie (falls es so weiter regnet).

The short trip to San Diego finished too soon and we were heading Las Vegas. But not on the direct route, but riding along a very interesting scenic drive through the Joshua Tree National Park, the Mojave Desert and Hoover Dam.
Located in the middle of Joshua Tree National Park there are these unique rock formations - the so-called Jumbo Rocks you see on my pics. The Joshua Trees were already faded and contributed quite large nuts.
At Hoover Dam two things were new to me: The extremely low water level of Lake Mead and the newly built impressive highway bridge that did not exist on my last visit six years ago. Taking into account the area of Lake Mead and the low water level, you can calculate how much water California is missing. I would love to send some of our current rain over there.
A visit to Las Vegas is a must be, especially if you are anyway in the area. But not as many believe, to gamble. I enjoy the ambience, beautiful hotels, the beautiful pools, the good food and the shows or whatever else offered. Siegfried and Roy have already retired, we this time visited the aquarium of the Mandalay Bay Hotel, Shark Rief. I couldn´t identify any evening shows offered which would have interested me particularly.
On April 19th we went to Los Angeles airport for onward flight to Hawaii, but that requires some more rain days here for an extra series of pictures to be posted.
