Es war schon immer mein Traum, Hawaii einmal zu besuchen. Ich war zwar im Laufe meines langen Arbeitslebens 27 mal in Los Angeles, habe es aber nie geschafft, mal einen Kurzurlaub auf Hawaii an eine Geschäftsreise dran zu hängen. Jetzt in der Rente war es endlich soweit.
Ich habe meine Reiseziele auf Hawaii ausschließlich nach eigenen Interessen ausgesucht, es gibt ja in Facebook und im Internet unglaublich viele wunderschöne Bilder und Geschichten über Hawaii. Ich habe mich auf die Insel Oahu (bzw. O´ahu) beschränkt, da diese von allem etwas bietet, bis auf die aktiven Vulkane, die es nur auf Big Island gibt.
Mein Reisebericht fängt an mit optisch wunderschönen Kitsch-Bildern aus Waikiki an, wo wir auch unser Hotel hatten. Es gibt ja weltweit nur wenige Großstädte, die einen eigenen Strand direkt am Meer haben (Rio, Barcelona etc), aber Honolulu mit seinem Stadtstrand Waikiki schlägt glaube ich alles.

It has always been my dream to visit Hawaii. Although During the course of my long working life I have been in Los Angeles 27 times but I never made it to Hawaii. Now in retirement, it finally happened.
I picked my destinations on Hawaii only after own interests, in Facebook and the Internet there are incredibly many wonderful pictures and stories about Hawaii. I visited the island of Oahu (or O'ahu) because it seemed to offer everything I wanted except the active volcanoes that exist only to Big Island.
My travelo report begins with visually beautiful images of Waikiki, where we also had our hotel. There are so few world cities with own beach directly colocated (Rio, Barcelona, etc), but Honolulu with its beach Waikiki beats everything.

Oahu ist eine relativ kleine Insel, von Honolulu im Süden bis zur Nordküste bei Turtle Bay sind es gerade mal 50 km. Einmal rund um die Insel an der Küste entlang sind circa 180 km.
Unsere Reise beginnt im Osten, über die Nordküste bei Turtle Bay vorbei wieder zurück. Da die Küstenstraße bei Kaéma Point unterbrochen ist, nutzten wir einen separaten Tag für die Westküste inklusive Pearl Harbor (separate Slideshow).

Oahu is a relatively small island, from Honolulu in the south to the north coast at Turtle Bay it is just 35 m. Once around the island along the coast is approximately 120 m.
Our journey begins in the east, to the north coast at Turtle Bay and back. Since the coastal road is interrupted at Kaéma, we used a separate day for the west coast, including Pearl Harbor (separate Slideshow).

Die Fahrt entlang Freeway H3 ist landschaftlich sensationell, auch wenn sie nur wenige Kilometer lang ist. Die Autobahn geht mitten durch einen tropischen Regenwald. Über die H2 ging es dann Richtung Norden zu Popukea Beach zum Schnorcheln. Innerhalb von nur 30 km gab es vom tropischen Regenwald über Heidelandschaft über Pinienwälder so ziemlich alle Landschaften zu sehen. Das Polynesische Kulturzentrum erreichten wir leider erst abends, so dass wir keine Zeit mehr für eine der Veranstaltungen hatten. Aber immerhin hatte ich mir dort einen wunderschönen Lei-Blumenkranz von einer netten Hawaianerin umhängen lassen. Die Leis wurden bis vor ca 20 Jahren als Begrüßungsgeschenk auf Hawaii den Ankommenden am Flughafen überreicht, heute kostet das 50$ - da war mir der Lei für 10$ im Polynesischen Zentrum lieber...

The journey along Freeway H3 is scenically spectacular, even if it is only a few kilometers long. The highway passes through the middle of a tropical rainforest. Along H2, we then went towards the north to Popukea Beach for snorkeling. Within 30 km there have been all kinds landscapes,
tropical rain forest, moorland, pine forests and many more. We unfortunately reached the Polynesian Cultural Center in the evening, so we did not have time to book one of the shows there. But at least I had bought a beautiful flower Lei there. Until about 20 years ago the Leis were presented as a welcome gift in Hawaii to all visitors arriving at the airport, today that is 50$ - the Lei for me at the Polynesian Center was only 10$ (that left financial room for Margaritas)...

Hier werden die historischen Erinnerungen an den 7. Dezember 1941 mit dem großen japanischen Angriff auf die US-Pazifikflotte in Pearl Harbor wachgehalten. Über dem gesunkenen Schlachtschiff Arizona wurde ein Nationaldenkmal richtet, das man besichtigen kann.
Im Internet steht zwar, dass man nur an wenigen Tagen im Jahr austretendes Öl sehen kann. Diese Ölflecken sind die so genannten Tränen der Arizona. Wir hatten das Glück, dass bei unserem Besuch auch gleich ein paar Tränen der Arizona zu sehen waren. Das Besucherzentrum ist als Museum hergerichtet, um die Wartezeit für die Überfahrt auf die Arizona nach Ford-Island zu verkürzen.

Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial
The historical memories of the December 7, 1941are kept awake with this memorial. For Americans this date is always in their minds, when the big Japanese attack on the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor destroyed many Battleships and Airbases and thousands of Soldiers and Civilians lost their lives. The National Memorial built above the sunken battleship Arizona, can be visited.
Although the Internet quotes that you can see leaking oil only on a few days per year. These oil spills are the so-called tears of Arizona. We were fortunate that when we could see a few tears of Arizona during our visit. The visitor center is set up as a museum in order to shorten the waiting time for the ship crossing to the Arizona on Ford Island.

Der Diamond Head Krater ist von der gesamten Bucht von Honolulu und Pearl Harbor aus dominierend zu sehen. Auch von Waikiki Beach und von unserem Hotelzimmer aus war er ein markanter Punkt. Deshalb reservierten wir uns einen halben Tag, um diesen zu besteigen und die herrliche Aussicht auf Honolulu, Waikiki und das Meer zu genießen. Der Höhenunterschied ist nur circa 300 m, so dass Auf- und Abstieg auch mit Sportschuhen leicht zu schaffen sind.

The Diamond Head Crater is dominantly visible from the whole bay of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor. It was a landmark also from Waikiki Beach and our hotel room. That's why we reserved half a day to hike to the top and enjoy the beautiful views of Honolulu, Waikiki and the ocean. The height difference is only about 1000 ft, so its an easy job even for sports shoes. You don´t really need hiking shoes.

Der Flug von Los Angeles nach Hawaii war nur 5 Stunden 20 Minuten. Beim Anflug über den Westen und Perl Harbor konnten wir schon einen ersten Eindruck von Hawaii bekommen.
Das Hotel hatte ich rein nach egoistischen Motiven im Internet über Google Streetview und Apple Fly-over ausgesucht. Das war ein Volltreffer. Direkt an der Beach von Waikiki, total sauber, wir hatten zufälligerweise ein Zimmer im höchsten Stockwerk (37) mit Blick auf das Meer und den Diamond Head Krater. Im Hotel Restaurant gab es einen riesiges Aquarium, in dem mehrmals am Tag die Fische und Stachelrochen von einer Taucherin gefüttert wurden. Einziges Problem war das teure Frühstück (30 $), aber wir haben das so gelöst, dass wir uns ab dem zweiten Tag bei McDonald's schräg gegenüber das Frühstück geholt haben und es auf dem Balkon mit Blick aufs Meer eingenommen haben. Das war sowieso viel schöner.
Das Hotel hat auch eine tolle Webcam, ihr müsst nur einfach mal nach dem Namen „Pacific Beach Hotel“ googeln, dann findet Ihr den Link zu dieser Webcam. Aber denkt an die 12 Stunden Zeitunterschied...
Das Nachtleben von Honolulu haben wir nur zu Fuß erkundet, da es da schon genug zu sehen und zu erleben gab.

The flight from Los Angeles to Hawaii was only 5 hours 20 minutes. During the approach over the West Beach and Perl Harbor we were able to get a first impressions of Hawaii.
I had selected the Hotel on the internet via Google Street View and Apple flyover following purely selfish motives . That was a direct hit. Right on the Beach of Waikiki, totally clean, we coincidentally had a room on the top floor (37) overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the Diamon Head crater. In the Hotel's restaurant, there was a huge aquarium where the fish and stingrays were fed by a diver several times a day. The only problem was the expensive breakfast ($ 30), but we have solved that by buying breakfast from McDonald's across the street and having that on the balcony with the beautiful view. This has been much nicer anyway.
The hotel also has a great webcam, you just have google for the name "Pacific Beach Hotel", and you will find the link to this webcam. But don´t forget time difference ...
We have explored the nightlife of Honolulu only by foot because there are so many nove things to see there and do - no car needed t night.
